Turkey Size Calculator

Count adults and kids, say how hungry the table is, and choose whether you want sandwiches tomorrow or just enough for tonight. You will get a whole-bird weight to shop for (or a smaller boneless breast target) — plus a fridge-thaw hint when you are buying frozen.

Each child counts as half an adult portion.

Frozen whole bird? Plan 2.63.4 days in the fridge — see the meat thaw calculator for detail.

Planning weights only — oven capacity, stuffing inside the bird, and deep-frying kits may need a smaller bird than this headline number. Always verify doneness with a thermometer (165°F / 74°C in the thickest part of the breast, without touching bone).

  • Whole-bird weights are what you buy at the store — bones, skin, and pan drippings are included.
  • If guests eat mostly white meat, consider an extra breast or thigh tray rather than only upsizing the bird.

How the recommendation is built

The calculator converts children into half-portions, applies a per-guest weight curve for light, typical, or hearty eaters, then adds extra pounds when you want leftovers. Whole turkeys use grocery-case weights including bones; boneless breast mode applies a lower multiplier because you are buying mostly edible meat.

Results round to the half-pound sizes you actually see in stores and clamp very small totals to a sensible minimum — most cases still want at least a 10 lb bird or a modest roast when you are feeding a crowd.

FAQ

How much turkey per person should I buy?
A common starting point for a whole bone-in turkey is about 1 to 1.25 lb of bird weight per adult when you want a normal holiday plate with some sides. Add roughly another third of a pound per person if you want meaningful leftovers, or choose a heartier appetite preset in the calculator.
Does this include bones and skin?
Yes. Grocery turkeys are sold by gross weight including bones. That is why boneless breast roasts need far fewer pounds for the same number of diners — the tool has a separate cut mode for that.
What if my turkey is still frozen?
Allow several days in a 40°F (4°C) refrigerator for large birds. The calculator shows a fridge-thaw planning band for whole turkeys and links to the meat thaw calculator for method details.
Is a bigger turkey always better?
Not always. Very large birds can be harder to fit in home ovens, take longer to cook evenly, and may dry in the breast before the legs are done. Spatchcocking, adding a breast roast, or serving a second protein can beat one oversized bird.
