Rice Portion Calculator

Tally adults and kids, pick how hungry the table is, and choose a rice family. You will get a dry-cup measure you can pour at the counter, an approximate gram weight, a loose cooked-volume hint for leftovers math, and a middle-of-the-road water starting point for absorption cooking.

Planning for ~2 adult-equivalent portions.

US legal cup (240 ml), level dry measure before rinsing. Rinsing drains a little starch and slightly changes weight. Brown rice needs a longer simmer and often a bit more water than white — treat water as a starting point and follow your pot or rice cooker manual when it disagrees.

How to think about the numbers

Dry rice is the stable shopping quantity: bags are labelled by weight, but many home cooks still scoop cups. The adult portion presets lean conservative for a side and more generous for a bowl where rice carries the meal. Children are counted as a fraction of an adult so family dinners do not systematically overcook a full pot.

Water lines are intentionally generic — pressure cookers, induction, and old gas burners all evaporate differently. If you already know your house ratio for a given pot, keep using it and treat the suggested water as a cross-check, not a mandate.

Why rice type changes the cooked column

Short-grain and sushi styles swell with less outward fluff than long-grain white or basmati, so the same dry cup produces a smaller cooked volume in the measuring cup even when the plate feels filling. Brown rice holds bran layers that drink more water and open more slowly, which is why both cooked volume and the water hint sit higher than for everyday long-grain white.

FAQ

Is a rice cup the same as a US measuring cup?
Many rice cookers ship with a smaller "rice cup" (often about 180 ml). This calculator uses the US legal cup (240 ml) found in standard dry measuring sets. If you cook with the appliance cup, measure once with water into a US cup to learn the conversion for your model.
Why is cooked rice only an approximate volume?
How much a cup of dry rice expands depends on variety, age, rinsing, and how firmly you pack the cooked rice. The cooked numbers here are ballpark fluff volumes for meal planning — not baking precision.
Should I rinse rice first?
Rinsing removes surface starch and can make grains more separate; it also washes away a tiny bit of dry weight. If you rinse heavily, bump dry rice up slightly if you are already at the low end of your usual habit.
Does brown rice use more water?
Usually yes. This tool suggests a higher water-to-rice ratio for brown rice than for long-grain white. If your grains are still chalky when the water is gone, add a splash next time or extend the simmer with a tight lid.
